How to do an SEO audit of your site

A useful SEO audit does not produce a list of a hundred alerts: it shows what is preventing your good pages from being explored, understood and then chosen in the results.

An SEO audit answers three questions: can Google access the site, does it understand each page, and do these pages deserve to be proposed in the face of competing results? Treat them in this order. Otherwise, you risk rewriting titles while the entire site is blocked from indexing.

1. Define important pages and goals

List the pages that should attract visitors: welcome, services, store categories, areas served and advisory content. Associate each with a specific intention, for example “Namur emergency plumber” or “Brussels ceremonial dress”.

A page should not cover twenty different topics. Note for each URL:

  • the main request and associated questions;
  • the expected action of the visitor;
  • available impressions, clicks and conversions;
  • the competing page that best meets the need today.

2. Check crawling and indexing

Search for a few pages with site:votredomaine.be, then use Google Search Console to get the actual state. Check the robots.txt file, XML sitemap, noindex tags, Canonical URLs and redirects.

A missing strategic page has priority. A login page, shopping cart or search result Absent internal search is generally normal. The goal is not to index the most URLs possible, but only those which provide an autonomous response.

If your problem is precisely the absence in the results, follow the diagnosis why is my site not showing up on Google.

3. Control technical health

Launch our free SEO audit on the domain then check as a priority:

Control Expected result
HTTPS All pages load without alert and redirect to HTTPS
HTTP Status Useful pages respond in 200, old ones redirect in 301
Mobile Readable text, usable buttons, no overflow
Speed Main content visible quickly, images correctly sized
Titles A descriptive and distinct title per page
Description A useful sentence that makes you want to click
H1 A clear main subject, consistent with the title

Don't try to get a perfect score. A somewhat heavy image on a page without traffic can wait; a broken redirect from an old popular page cannot.

4. Evaluate content and search intent

Read the page like a customer. Does he quickly find the service, the area, the price or its calculation method, deadlines, evidence and next action? Then compare the results already visible for the query: do they answer a question, do they offer a product, a list or a local service? Your format should match the intent, without copying their text.

Delete almost identical pages created for each city if they provide no value. real local information. Instead, enrich important pages with your achievements, your responses to objections, original photos and verifiable information.

Each strategic page must receive links from relevant pages, with a label that explains the destination. A sheet on the choice of a domain can thus point towards the domain checker, rather than a vague “click here”.

Identify orphan pages, accessible only by the sitemap, and broken links. Keep simple navigation: the visitor and the robot must be able to achieve a service important in just a few clicks.

Find out which sites mention your business. A link from a professional federation, a municipality, a supplier or a relevant local media is better than a hundred directories automatic. Especially check for lost links, old URLs still receiving visits and unrelated brand mentions.

Don’t buy a bunch of artificial links. They neither build commercial trust nor lasting visibility.

Transform the audit into an action plan

Classify the findings in a simple table: problem, pages affected, impact, effort, responsible and inspection date. Start with:

  1. indexing blockages and server errors;
  2. strategic pages that are absent or have the wrong intention;
  3. redirects, broken links and duplicate content;
  4. speed and mobile experience;
  5. Secondary beacon improvements.

Then measure impressions, clicks and requests over several weeks. SEO is evolving more slowly than an advertising campaign: a properly explored correction still needs to be reevaluated by the engine. Keep the date of each change so you know what actually happened. produces an effect.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an SEO audit take?

An initial diagnosis of a small site takes less than an hour. A complete audit with analysis of queries, competitors, links and each page template requires more time. Start with critical blocks before expanding.

Can you do an SEO audit for free?

Yes. An automated tool quickly spots technical issues and missing tags. Supplement it with data from Google Search Console and human reading of pages, because no score alone measures their usefulness.

What SEO score should you achieve?

There is no universal score that guarantees ranking. A score is used to compare controls in the same tool; your real indicators remain indexing, impressions, clicks and requests obtained on useful queries.

How often to do an SEO audit?

Check after a redesign or migration, then at regular intervals depending on the frequency of changes. On a small, stable site, a quarterly review and monthly data monitoring is generally sufficient.
