Domain name

Domain name already taken: what to do?

Seeing your ideal name marked “unavailable” does not require you to pay a fortune or choose an illegible address. Start by understanding who is using it, then choose the right solution.

A domain already taken is not necessarily used. It can display an active site, redirect to another address, be offered for sale or not show any pages. These situations do not call for the same response.

Start by reviewing the domain

Open the address in your browser without entering any personal information. Then search the name in an engine and view the public data provided by the registry. Contact details of the holder are often hidden, but a contact form or the registrar can sometimes transmit a message.

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Is the domain used for an active business?
  2. Does this company work in your industry or region?
  3. Does the name correspond to a protected brand or a well-known brand?

If the answers are positive, look for another identity. An almost identical variant exposes you to mail errors, lost traffic and possibly legal conflict.

Solutions, from the simplest to the most expensive

Choose another extension

For a Belgian activity, a .be may be more relevant than a .com already taken. For a activity centered on France, the .fr sends the same local signal. Read our comparison extensions .be, .fr and .com before falling back on an exotic extension.

Adapt the name slightly

Add an element that brings meaning: your profession, your city, your specialty or a word of brand. dupontarchitecture.be is lighter than dupont-belgique-officiel.com. Keep a short, pronounceable and easy to type address.

Some useful variations:

  • brand name + activity;
  • activity + city, if your area will remain local;
  • abbreviated name actually used by your customers;
  • new distinctive brand, if the project has not yet been launched.

Avoid meaningless numbers, double hyphens and intentional spellings false. The visitor memorizes the natural name and lands at the other holder.

Contact the owner

If the domain is essential to your brand and not used by a competitor, an acquisition may discuss. Don't start by announcing your maximum budget. Just ask if the holder is considering a transfer and under what conditions.

For the transaction, use an intermediary or recognized escrow service: money is only returned to the seller after the effective transfer. Also provide a written agreement specifying the field, price, deadlines and obligations of each party.

Never send a direct payment to a stranger based solely on an email exchange. Having access to the site does not prove that you can transfer the domain.

Monitor a possible release

You can track the domain, but don't base a launch on its expiration date. The names generally go through several grace periods before possible deletion, and Automated services attempt to recover them as soon as they are released. Launch your project on a address that you already control.

False good ideas

Idea Main risk
Add only one hyphen Send visitors to domain without hyphen
Choose a voluntary fault Having to spell the address every time
Copy a competitor with another extension Confusion, lost traffic and possible litigation
Wait for expiration Delay without guarantee to recover the name
Pay without an intermediary Lose the money without getting the transfer

What if the domain takes over your brand?

Keep the evidence: brand certificate, dates of use, captures of the domain and exchanges with the holder. Do not publicly threaten or try to take over the domain yourself. Depending on the extent and the situation, an extrajudicial or judicial procedure may be possible. Have the file evaluated by a specialist: similarity alone is not enough.

Leave with a better name

Before reserving the alternative, pass it through the domain checker, search for brands and do the domain test telephone. Our file to choose a domain name gives you the complete grid. A slightly different name but clear, available and actually to you is better than a flimsy imitation of the first choice.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy back a domain name that has already been taken?

Yes, if its owner agrees to sell it. Go through a marketplace or escrow service to secure payment and transfer. The price is free and can greatly exceed the normal cost of a recording.

Can I take the same name with a hyphen?

Technically yes if it is available, but your visitors risk arriving at the domain without a hyphen. Discard this option if the other address belongs to a competitor or a well-known brand.

Does an unused domain necessarily become free again?

No. Its holder can renew it indefinitely, even without a visible site. An expiration date displayed in a register is not a promise of release, because renewal can occur until the last moment.

Can we recover a domain that uses its brand?

A procedure exists in certain cases, but ownership of a trademark does not automatically win the case. In particular, it is necessary to examine the anteriority, the rights of the holder and his good or bad faith with competent advice.
